2. Northern Lights & Seasons
Can you see the Northern Lights from Arctic Retreat?
Yes. Arctic Retreat’s secluded location in the forests of Arctic Sweden offers excellent opportunities to see the Northern Lights from the retreat itself. With very little light pollution and wide views of the Arctic sky, guests can often experience the Aurora Borealis without travelling far from their cabin.
The Northern Lights season typically runs from early September to early April, with the best viewing conditions occurring on clear, dark nights. While sightings can never be guaranteed, staying for several nights significantly increases your chances of witnessing this remarkable natural phenomenon.
When is the best time to see the Northern Lights in Arctic Sweden?
The northern lights can be seen when it is dark, the sky is clear of clouds, and the lights are active.
Darkness returns to the north towards the end of August and increases through to late December. From late December to early April, each day grows lighter, and it is not generally dark enough to see the lights by mid-April.
Cloud cover is, of course, unpredictable, but we have a drier climate than many other parts of Arctic Europe, and as such, we have many nights with clear skies. How it is during your stay is a matter of luck.
The lights can be active at any time, depending on the solar wind output from the sun. Given clear skies, we often see the lights, but the strength can vary. In general, it is also a matter of good fortune to be here on those nights when a solar storm happens.
We have, though, noticed over the years that September/early October and March have more consistent northern lights sightings and greater strength, and we understand this is due to the Earth being tilted side-on to the sun, making it easier for the solar wind to follow the magnetic field into the atmosphere.

What is the best month to visit Arctic Sweden?
The best time to visit Arctic Sweden depends on the experiences you are looking for.
For winter activities and Northern Lights, February and March are often considered the best months. Snow conditions are excellent, and in late February and March, daylight hours are longer, and temperatures are generally more comfortable than during the coldest part of winter.
In summer, June and July offer endless daylight under the Midnight light, making them ideal for hiking, fishing, wildlife experiences, and enjoying the tranquillity of Arctic nature.
For autumn, September is a favourite among many visitors. The forests transform into vibrant shades of red, orange, and gold, temperatures remain pleasant, and as the darkness returns, the Northern Lights season begins.
At Arctic Retreat, every season offers a unique experience, from snow-covered winter landscapes and the Aurora Borealis to the Midnight light of summer and the colourful beauty of Arctic autumn.
I have booked a Northern Lights tour. What happens if the forecast is poor?
Northern Lights are a natural phenomenon and can never be guaranteed. If weather conditions suggest better viewing opportunities on another evening, we will try to reschedule your Northern Lights activity, subject to guide availability and your itinerary, but it is not guaranteed. Even when the forecast is not ideal, the activity remains a memorable Arctic experience led by your private, dedicated guide.
Is it dark all day during winter?
No. Even during the darkest period of the year in late November, December, and early January, we still experience around 4 hours of daylight. The light is softer than in southern regions and often resembles a long sunrise and sunset, creating beautiful Arctic winter scenery.
How cold does it get during winter?
Winter temperatures in Arctic Sweden can vary significantly, ranging from around 0°C to as low as -40°C (-40°F). With proper winter clothing and guidance from our team, guests can enjoy outdoor activities comfortably throughout the season.
What winter clothing is provided and what should I pack?
Arctic Retreat provides winter clothing, including overalls, winter boots, outer gloves, balaclavas, and warm hats. We recommend that guests bring their own base layers and mid-layers for maximum comfort during Arctic winter activities.
For a detailed packing guide, please visit our Winter Preparations page: https://arcticretreat.se/2020/11/17/winter-preparations-what-to-bring/
Will activities be cancelled if it is very cold?
Guest safety is always our highest priority. We aim to operate all scheduled activities whenever possible, but in extreme weather conditions, we may adjust or modify experiences to ensure a safe and enjoyable outing. Our team works closely with local guides and activity providers to make the best decisions based on daily conditions.
3. Activities & Experiences
Do I need previous experience to drive a snowmobile?
No previous experience is required. Before each snowmobile tour, your guide will provide a thorough safety briefing and driving instructions. Our guided snowmobile experiences are suitable for beginners and experienced riders alike. A valid driving licence and a minimum age of 16 are required to operate a snowmobile. You will find additional information regarding snowmobiling in our terms and conditions. https://arcticretreat.se/terms-and-conditions/
Can I book activities after I arrive?
We strongly recommend booking activities well in advance, particularly popular experiences such as dog sledding and snowmobiling. While some activities may be available on short notice, all bookings are subject to availability and cannot be guaranteed after arrival.
Can I see wildlife during my stay?
Yes. Arctic Sweden is home to a variety of wildlife, including moose, reindeer, hares, foxes, beavers, and many bird species. Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed, but guests often spot wildlife during transfers and sometimes in the surroundings around Arctic Retreat.
Are there walking trails near Arctic Retreat?
Yes. Several safe and easily accessible walking trails begin directly from Arctic Retreat, offering opportunities to explore the surroundings.
